This study aims to explore how Taiwanese women’s perceptions were changed after experiencing cross-cultural romance (CCR) and how Giddens’ (1992) concept of “intimacy as democracy” was implemented in their intimate relationships. Seven highly educated Taiwanese females who experienced or are experiencing CCR with white men from democratized countries (e.g., Belgian, Sweden, New Zealand) were recruited for the current research. Their in-depth interviews with the first researcher reveal that: Most interviewees had no desire for and some even felt repulsion toward CCR. However, they changed their perceptions and were satisfied with the respectful attitude and reasonable communication style of their non-Taiwanese partners after experiencing CCR. The nascent “pure relationship'' can be seen in their relationships in terms of self-identity, autonomy, and negotiation empowerment. Nonetheless, immigrant women may still be ignored and silenced under the white/male dominant knowledge system due to overlooking the intersectional effect of gender, race, local traditional culture, and the ambivalence of women’s self-identity. Fortunately, these Taiwanese women strategically used the differences in laws and gender norms between Taiwan and their partners’ societies to escape from multiple oppression.
