安樂哲所提出的「儒家角色倫理學」，有別於儒家規範倫理學與德性倫理學，不遵循既定的倫理原則與美德，而是藉由解消儒家思想中的超越概念，從家庭與社會角色的意義與功能建立人際關係，將關係視為培養道德能力的環境，具有開放性與變動性。儒家角色倫理學所重視的「孝」概念是成人之教的基礎，由孝維持儒家的家庭關係，可進而建構當代的家庭倫理，為今人面對家庭問題提供一種參考的思想依據。

The Confucian role ethics proposed by Roger T. Ames, different from the Confucian normative ethics and virtue ethics, does not follow existing ethical principles and virtues. Instead, by dismissing the idea of Confucian transcendence and builds interpersonal relationships in terms of the meanings and functions of family and social roles, which regard relationships as an environment for developing ethical capabilities with openness and variability. The concept of “filial piety” emphasized by Confucian role ethics is the basis of moral education. Maintaining Confucian family relations by filial piety can further construct contemporary family ethics, and provide a reference basis for today’s family problems.
