自由主義將其興起與發展歸功於啟蒙祛魅的人文主義，而大大低估和誤判了基督信仰在其發展中的支撐、規約和引導作用。由是也就造成自由主義發展中基督信仰的內在轉向，即自由主義所信奉的上帝從一個異於人且高於人的「神聖超越者」，逐步內化到理性之中，成為一個人能夠把握、甚至取代的對象。這種「人神的變奏」實質是西方文明徹底走向「內在超越」之路的一個具體反映。通過審視自由主義與基督信仰關係的演變，我們可以發現神聖超越者的退隱正是導致當今自由主義歧路的一個重要根源。

It is generally recognized that the rise of Liberalism should own much to Humanism, but that the Faith in God which play an important role in the development of Liberalism is significantly underestimated and misunderstood. Therefore, in the history of Liberalism, the Faith in God turned internally: God that liberalists believed in was from a sacredness external transcendence above man to an object which is controlled, transcended even or replaced by human reason，which essence is a special representation of “the immanent transcendence” in modern western civilization. Scanning the variation of God and man, we could find that “lack” of God is the main cause that resulted liberalism goes astray in contemporary.
