This research is an attempt to show the ethical characteristics of the principle of “Haewon-sangsaeng” (解冤相生, the resolution of grievances for mutual beneficence) with its relation to the idea of “Guarding against self-deception” (無自欺) in Daesoon Thought (大巡思想). Daesoon Thought is a new religious movement originated by Kang Jeungsan (姜甑山 1871-1909) in Korea at the turn of the 20th century. For the analysis, I will examine whether this principle shares some aspects with Kant’s deontological ethics, along with Aristotelian idea of teleological virtue ethics, then comparing both to Mill’s consequentialist view. It will be shown that guarding against self-deception is presented both as one of the teleological objectives and normative ground for practice, while sharing several features of virtue ethics, especially those of Asian virtue ethics directed toward the perfection of Dao.
Further, I will argue that the deontological and teleological features are interlinked with the spiritual practice of Daesoon practitioners aiming at Dao-unification (道通), such that guarding against self-deception facilitates mutual relations between Haewon-sangsaeng and other tenets of Daesoon Thought, such as “the harmonious union between divine beings and human beings” (神人調化) and “the true stage of Dao-unification” (道通真境).
