The purpose of this research is to shine a light on the history of the film negotiations between Japan and Britain during the early 20th century. Even though these discussions have not been studied closely, they played a significant role in building the foundation of Japan’s film industry. In this paper, I will focus specifically on Yoshizawa & Co. (吉澤商店), which was an important institution during the early period of Japan’s film industry. Using Yoshizawa & Co. as a case in point, I will trace the beginning years of those Japanese companies, which operated in Britain in order to supply films for the growing number of movie theatres operating in Japan. By highlighting this one example of negotiations between Japan and Britain, I aim to elucidate how essential such discussions were to the modernization of Japan’s entire film industry. By casting a light specifically on Yoshizawa & Co., one can understand the formation and development of the early phase of Japan’s film industry. Based on newly-discovered source material, I will retrace the path Yoshizawa & Co. took in London. Lastly, I will reconsider the important role that film negotiations between Japan and Britain played in establishing and developing Japan’s film industry in general.
