This article examines the interaction of what has been called the “radical continuance” of history with the “radical presence” of lyric poetry in the use of historical allusion, and more broadly in the tradition of “poems on the past.” The starting point of the discussion is the ancient concept of “correlation” (lei), through which the Chinese language uses types to tie together various ideas, stressing “horizontal relationships” and implying spatiality and a sense of order. In this case, events become objects and history becomes a silhouette, as parallelism condenses stories onto a nominal surface. When poets communed with the ancients in the scenery of historical sites, crossing the boundaries of the physical and mental worlds, the evocation of antiquity and the present was part of a broad phenomenon of “making correlations” (yinpi lianlei), which was one manifestation of correlative thinking. Making use of these properties of the Chinese language, poets were able to realize a “radical continuance” in the interaction of poetry and history. This also explains how natural scenery infused itself so deeply into the Chinese poetic tradition.
