In this article I analyze the concepts of ji and she in the Zuozhuan, arguing that it is wrong to make a distinction between both in terms of certain national boundary or river. Strictly speaking, Zuozhuan refers to the term ji as riding a boat crossing a river, while to she as wading across a stream on foot or by driving a car, respectively. Besides, there is another difference between ji and she that the activity of former can be available for all seasons, as opposed to the latter one prohibited in the summer. It has also to paid attention that to ji or to she must depend on the degree of water potential, that one can do nothing but ji the river by riding a boat when the river floods, a case opposed to the situation of low-water level in which one is able to she the water, either by car or on foot. Based on what have been mentioned above, it can be held that the terms ji and she in the Zuozhuan have their respective contents, and that it is unreasonable to take both as referring to same kind of activity.
