上海圖書館藏劉寶楠《論語》長編稿三十九冊、經注稿二十冊，以及復旦大學圖書館藏劉恭冕《論語正義補》一冊謄清稿本在在揭示了劉氏父子兩世撰述《論語》新疏的具體過程，同時證明劉恭冕序言所述大致符合歷史實情。劉寶楠撰作《論語正義》主要受到丁晏《論語孔注證偽》的影響，起意於道光元年、二年間，隨即編纂長編。至道光二十八年，長編稿成，七月初一始撰經注稿；道光三十年起，因政務繁忙，囑其子在自己的指導下撰寫疏文，實際執筆者為劉恭冕，劉寶楠同步編纂經注稿以示撰述方向，此一合作模式持續至咸豐五年初，因此形成了刊本前十七卷與後七卷分別署名的情況。《正義》初稿成於五年末、六年初；咸豐六年至同治四年的十年間，劉恭冕對疏文進行增修，最終於同治四年完成；同治五年後陸續付印，以篇為單位，隨改隨刻，增入師友部分考證。《正義》全帙刊刻告竣於光緒初年，師友審閱考證的餘波，則集結形成《論語正義補》一卷。

The compilation manuscript of 59 volumes of Lunyu by Liu Bao-Nan collected in Shanghai Library and the manuscript of Lunyu zhengyibu by Liu Gong-Mian collected in Fudan University Library reveal the specific process of Liu family’s writing of the new edition of annotations on Lunyu, and prove that the narration of Liu Gong-Mian’s preface is roughly in line with the historical facts. Liu Bao- Nan’s Lunyu zhengyi was mainly influenced by Ding Yan’s Lunyu kongzhu zhengwei. It was intended to compile a long draft from 1821 to 1822. By 1848, the long manuscript was completed and the manuscript of scripture and annotations of Lunyu were written on July 1st of the lunar calendar. Since 1850, Liu Bao- Nan was busy with government affairs and asked his son to write notes under his own guidance. Liu Bao-Nan compiled the manuscript of scripture and annotations simultaneously. The family cooperation mode lasted until the beginning of 1855. Therefore, the first seventeen volumes and the last seven volumes of Lunyu zhengyi were authored separately. The first draft of Lunyu zhengyi was written during 1855- 1856. During the ten years from 1856 to 1865, Liu Gong-Mian revised the first draft continuously, and finally completed it in 1865. After 1866, it was published and printed successively, with articles as units, with changes and publications, and some research results were added by his teachers and friends. The whole book of Lunyu zhengyi was completed in the early years of Guangxu of the Qing, and those added by the teachers and friends were integrated into Lunyu zhengyibu.
