英文摘要

Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, religious control is a core essential of the communist rule China. In keeping with its Marxist roots, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) firmly declared itself as atheist. Under such regime, Scientific Atheism is being actively promoted while foreign Christian missionary attempts are viewed as a form of imperialist cultural invasion. Though at times appears in an oblique manner, anti-Christianity sentiment is nonetheless a persistent element in CCP’s social construction. Through the manipulation of academic historiography reconstruction, Christianity is represented on one hand as an aggressive form of foreign cultural invasion; while on the other hand, an inseparable accomplice of the Western Imperialists. This article aims to point out the underlying significance of CCP’s radical discursive formation in reshaping the role and image of Christianity in the history of contemporary China. The stated critical approach not only makes clear the ideological core essentials of the party’s religious policy, but also legitimizes the party’s rationale in its manipulative interpretation of the historical role and development of Christianity in a Chinese context.
