How did the concept of “lived religion” emerge, and in what ways does it alter the meaning of religion? Pursuing several case studies of scholars who have contributed to the history of lived religion, this essay foregrounds their dissatisfaction with “elite” or institutional history. Lived religion became a doorway into everyday or “popular religion” and its contradictions. Lived religion is also about meaning making and the process of appropriation. The essay concludes by asking whether the weakening of Christianity in the west via secularization means that an alternative such as “vicarious religion” is needed.
