This paper explores war imagery and its discussion within Song and Yuan period general and prime marshal texts. The discussion focuses on the dichotomy of orthodox and illicit to discuss the construction of orthodox Daoism, as well as the criticism, destruction, and prohibition of illicit shamans and licentious cults. Among the methods and arts (fashu 法術) of Song and Yuan Daoism, there developed prime marshal and general fashu texts, which employ a large number of esoteric spells and in which many of the generals are related to Esoteric Buddhism. Indeed, the texts provide pictures of great hordes of troops along with various kinds of new-style ritual instruments to formulate imagery and structure reminiscent of regularized military affairs in order to manage illicit worship, shamans, deities, and temples. These aspects demonstrate the divisions in the religious market, as well as the establishment of religious authority, and reveal new religious textual forms and the emergence and development of new religious practices. This paper, in the second part, takes Prime Marshal Yin's fashu texts as research cases to explore the relationship between the Great Methods of Prime Marshal Yin (Yin yuanshuai dafa 殷元帥大法) and Esoteric Buddhism's Yamāntaka (Dawei deming wang 大威德明王) and their manifestations of war imagery.
