Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors related to the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding needlestick prevention among nursing students from five-year junior college programs.
Methods: Convenience sampling was employed for this cross-sectional study. The participants, who were nursing students from a junior college of medicine, nursing, and management in Taipei City, were recruited from March 20, 2019 to August 3, 2019 and completed a cross-sectional survey. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The questionnaire consisted of two sections: the participants’ demographic background information and a scale on their knowledge, attitudes, and practices with respect to needlestick prevention. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 22 statistical software by conducting mean and standard deviation calculations, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson productmoment correlation coefficient analyses, and linear regression.
Results: Of the 500 questionnaires that were distributed, 439 were found to be valid (87.8%). The nursing students’ knowledge of needlestick prevention was significantly different (p <. 05) with respect to their year of study, current internship level, current internship program, and internship experience to date; the nursing students’ needlestick prevention practices were significantly different (p < .05) with respect to their sex, year of study, current internship level, current internship program, and internship experience to date (p < .05).Nursing students’ knowledge of needlestick injury prevention and attitude were negatively correlated (r = -.12, p = .011), knowledge and practices were negatively correlated (r = -.09, p = .046), attitude and needlestick prevention practices were positively correlated (r = .40, p < .001). The results of the multivariable linear regression showed that female nursing students were associated with significantly higher needlestick safety precautions (β = .13, p = .002).
Conclusion: The higher the nursing level of education, the less prevalence of needlestick safety precautions. It is recommended that school educators continue to pay close attention to needlestick prevention practices of nursing students before their internship rotation.
