台灣漸趨多族群社會,而夏威夷是多族群社會的典型;本研究期望汲取夏威夷州家長對學前教育機構選擇之態度,以提供台灣幼兒園經營之參考。研究者訪談夏威夷9位居民,綜合文件分析與訪談結果,獲得結論如下:夏威夷學前教育不普及,許多幼兒未入Preschool。經濟能力佳的家長會在Kindergarten階段讓孩子爭取私立名校就讀,然後直升至高中;無法負荷高額學費者則排隊抽籤唸成績頂尖的公立學校。私立名校以考試甄選入學,幼兒四歲就需補習準備應考;升學率高的Preschool也有入學考試並且競爭激烈,許多幼兒未滿三歲就有落榜經驗。學生成績表現決定學校對家長的吸引力。在教育自由選擇的社會,幼兒園經營的競爭力取決於學生成就,但也顯現幼兒園如何促進教育機會正義的課題。

英文摘要

Taiwanese society tends to diverse ethnic groups just like the typical case, Hawaii. This study hopes to learn the experience of the parents' attitude of preschool choice to be the reference for Taiwanese preschool managers. The researcher interviews nine residents in Hawaii and analyzes the files and obtains the results as follows: pre-education in Hawaii is not popular because many children haven't enrolled to preschool. Children from high-SES will try to enroll to the private star-kindergarten and hope to continue study to high school. Children from common family which can't offer the high tuition will wait in line to enroll to the public kindergarten with higher academic scores. To enroll to the private star-kindergartens, children have to pass the entrance examination, so many four-years-old children go to cram schools to prepare the test. The preschool with a high proportion to enroll to the private star-kindergarten also has an entrance examination and the competition is intense, so many children below three years old already have the failure experience. The attraction of preschools to parents depends on students' academic performance. Under the society of free educational choice, the competitiveness of preschool management depends on students' achievement, but it just unmasks the issue of how to improve the justness of educational opportunity.
