The early Western missionaries in China from 16th to 18th Centuries wrote their cultural understanding on China based on different sources. One part came from the understanding of missionaries who were in China, the other part came from the missionaries in Europe who used the letters and reports written by the Jesuits in China and edited these sources to be books for the European readers. The Jesuit Jean Baptiste du Halde (1674-1743) has never been to China, but wrote books related to China according to the written sources by the other missionaries in China. In 1735, he published four volumes books regarding to China, namely The General History of China/Empire of China: Chinese Tartary, Corea and Tibet which contained letters and reports written by the Jesuit missionaries in China. Du Halde thought that all of these materials should not only be kinds of “archive”, but books, so that more European could understand China more in details. The understanding of Du Halde on the ethnic minorities was based on the letters and reports by the other western missionaries in China. His understanding and interpretation could be treated as the second fusion of Horizon based on the first impression of the other missionaries. This paper aims to explore how Du Halde understood and interpreted the ethnic minorities in China in his works.
