Organisms that have previously experienced a specific environmental stimulus often show better tolerance or resistance to stress later. This general phenomenon is known as priming. Priming in plant stress research is a sophisticated physiological response that involves multiple molecular mechanisms of perception, signal transduction, and memory. Currently, the commonly used Chinese translation for priming does not accurately convey the original meaning in plant stress science. Therefore, we propose “預啟” as a specific term for priming in plant stress biology to facilitate scholarly communication in Chinese. In addition to explaining the rationale for this translation, this short article briefly highlights the relationship between priming and memory in the studies of biotic and abiotic stresses in plants.
