本文擬對熊十力與牟宗三這對師徒之間的承繼關係做一說明。在熊先生所開創的當代新儒家學派之中，相較於唐君毅與徐復觀先生，牟先生可說是承繼熊先生學問較多的一位。牟先生一生為儒家的現代化做出貢獻，他企圖補強儒家在當代文化潮流中的不足，一方面倡議民主、科學，分別由西學與中國文化根基兩面向來進行探討；另一方面，積極地消化西學，面對挑戰而做出回應。雖然牟先生之攝受西學，是熊先生所較缺乏的，然牟先生之思想元素，卻有不少是從熊先生而來的啟發，對此本文將做探討。有感於若僅以先秦儒與宋明儒來回應當代，恐怕有所不足，牟先生於是從兩方面著手而來提出因應之道：（1）深入儒家經典而確實把握儒家之精神方向，力求返本以新開，而不自亂陣腳；（2）攝受西學優點，且補西學之不足，並且梳理與中華文化之間的對話可能。如中華文化「圓而神」的境界，是否也能在西風東漸的激盪中發展出知識、科學。

This article is to describe the relationship between Mou Tsung San and his mentor, Hsiung Shin-li. In the school of New Confucianism, Mr. Mou inherits Mr. Hshiung’s scholarship more than Tang Chun-I and Xu Fuguan. Contributing to the modernization of Confucianism throughout his life, Mou tries to supplement Confucianism among the trends of contemporary culture. On the one hand, he advocates democracy and science, approaching Confucianism through western learning and Chinese culture; on the other hand, he aggressively processes western learning and rises up to all the challenges. Though lacking Mr. Mo’s knowledge in western learning, Mr. Hsiung inspires Mr. Mou to a great extent, which is the topic we are to inquire in this article. Knowing that pre-Qin Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism are not enough to respond to the challenges of the contemporary days, Mr. Mou addresses this deficiency in two ways: First, we should delve in to Confucian classics and grasp the spirit of Confucianism, building new paths by tracing to the origins instead of moving in a disoriented way; second, we should fill up the gaps in our western learning and create a dialogue between western learning and Chinese culture to see if we can develop new knowledge and science as the western influence is spreading over China.
