What is the ultimate reality? It’s a big question that could be explored differently from various angles. It is an issue of philosophical thinking, theological questioning, poetical writing, even an issue relating to the meaningfulness of life. One would always ask if the ultimate reality has been existing everywhere, and whether it is reachable or touchable although it is invisible. This paper would discuss this question according to Vincent Shen’s reading theory and his thought of shu zhe shan tui, the concept of strangification (shu 恕) as an action of original generosity from oneself toward many others. It explains, firstly, the meaning of poetic reading through Mencius’s thought of yi yi ni zhi tracing back the original willing of Heaven hidden in texts, by contrasting with Vincent Shen’s theory of reading Chinese Classics, to investigate the way of disclosing the hidden and the presence of the ultimate reality through reading, a process of renaming and rewriting. Secondly, this paper focuses the concept of shu, negative golden rule of reciprocity between self and many others, to see how the Confucian enjoy in the breeze of Spring represents a kind of existential experience of union of Man and ultimate reality, through the practice of shu of the Sages as well as the action of shu of Heaven and Earth.
