This article explores the implications of coexistence of urban parks and temples for urban governance. The notions of 'articulated publicness' and 'territorial adaptation' are used to capture the mixed-use quality of the land, showing its effect of overlapping different territorialization logics and generating texture and folding effects like trace, dislocation and adaptation. Urban parks are the territorialized product of modern urban planning on land zoning, and embody civic publicness and its related disciplines. Conversely, temples develop territory through spiritual power that promises divine reward and retribution, forming a folk publicness. These two logics of territorialization and publicness occur within the fissure of urban development and continue to coexist, revealing the flexibility in urban governance, where temples can legitimize themselves through their spiritual traces, displacement within the park, or use as public welfare facilities. Through investigation of four parks in Sanchong District, New Taipei City that respectively hold a temple, we argue that the coexistence of park and temple illustrates not only the state of accommodating diverse facilities in the park owing to the lack of public space in Taiwan's cities, but also the articulation between modernity and traditionality.
