The population of the east of Taiwan is declining and aging (Hualien and Taitung) due to urbanization and peripheralization. To reverse this trend, public policies are encouraging more people to return home or migrate to East Taiwan. Further, lifestyle migrants are moving to East Taiwan for reasons of practical life, dreams and opportunities, instilling new life values. The values of these lifestyle migrants are a significant issue in this study. Most previous research is founded on the push-pull theory to explain the motivations and phenomena of migration, but cannot identify the deeper values affecting the motivations for immigration. The value contexts of lifestyle migrants who subvert mainstream social values by abandoning urban convenience and comfort are particularly difficult to understand. This study applies the means-end chain method and interviews 80 lifestyle migrants by snow-balling sampling. In-depth one-on-one laddering interviews are performed to ascertain the value contexts these lifestyle migrants'. The hierarchical value map is then established according to the attribute-consequence-value chain model to explore the value contexts of lifestyle migrants. The research results identify six important values for lifestyle migrants, namely place identity, quality of life, love and belonging, dream come true, spiritual satisfaction and cultural inheritance. Moreover, the natural environment is the most important factor that attracts migration. The family affection resulting in return migrations also inspires love and belonging, which motivates individuals' homecoming. Furthermore, although immigrants still have practical considerations, such as economics and work, these are mere means in achieving their emigration dreams. As an academic contribution, this study proposes and confirms a theoretical basis model on the value context of lifestyle migrants. Moreover, this research provides directions for policy-making.
