This study reviews Neil Brenner's scholarly development and summarizes his academic contributions, debates and possibilities for future application in Taiwan. As one of the most important theorists in contemporary urban studies, Brenner argues, from a Lefebvrian Marxist perspective, that urbanization has a material, imaginative and practical relationship with the development of capitalism, and then presents planetary urbanization in the context of the spatial transformation of the capitalist state, neoliberal urban development, and recent globalization and climate change. This concept is a comprehensive and critical intellectual framework for understanding the spatial organization of capitalism and the dynamics of change. After presenting Brenner's core theoretical perspectives, this work also examines three academic debates in which Brenner participated in order to anchor and highlight the specificity and importance of his perspectives, and concludes from relevant empirical studies that the objects of research on planetary urbanization extend to primary industries, infrastructure and urban hinterlands, which are neglected by conventional urban studies. Finally, this study suggests possible directions and issues for research into planetary urbanization, which is a major driving force of current capitalist development, in the context of Taiwan, and highlights the analytical merits of such a perspective.
