Yongan Melody (literally, The Melody of Eternal Peace) is a contemporary historical novel that tells the love story between Li Chengqi and the Princess of Yongan. However, Yongan Melody is more than just a romantic novel; it carries political implications. Li and the princess lived during the Wu Zhou dynasty, a period marked by the battles and collaboration for identity and imperial government between the Li and Wu families. Furthermore, it creates the female protagonist Wu Yongan. The role of “Yongan” not only exists as the heroine's name, but also represents “a flourishing age and an eternal peace”: a beautiful hope that does not exist in present but safe and worry-free forever. Li Chengqi is at the edge of history, but Yongan Melody highlights his historical evaluation “abdication” to reflect the value of “the families' lives do not sacrifice for royal authority”. Meanwhile, Yongan Melody utilizes the image “romantic” in the historical records of Li Chengqi, and “a flourishing age and an eternal peace” becomes “a flourishing age” and the heroine Yongan. The Wu Zhou dynasty was a very special time in history, as Wu Zetian has a surname of Wu, but her descendants had a surname of Li. In addition, even though she reigned as an empress, the royal members were still descendants of the Li family. The imperial family members who were surnamed Li lived under the authority of their mother or grandmother, exhibiting an extremely obvious absence of the father or paternal kin. It can clearly be seen that Yongan Melody utilizes the writing techniques “Fictitiousness, Fringe and Absence”.
