Bachimen is a narrow waterway between Hoping Island and the main island of Taiwan. It is named Bachi (eight feet) for its width and elegantly dubbed as Haimen (ocean gate) for being located at the mouth of Keelung Harbor. Bachimen is known for its unique natural features, including grotesque rock formations, high tides, clear water and abundant fish resources. These characteristics have inspired classical poetry by both Taiwanese and Japanese literati to portray Bachimen as “a slow-paced fishing village”, “an abundant fishing ground” and “a peculiar resort”. However, under the influence of the “eight views” cultural tradition, the Taiwanese literati described Bachimen as the “ideal state of Crystal Clear Haimen.” to reflect Chinese literati’s pursuit of a leisurely, carefree state. They also portrayed Bachimen as a “bridge of communication across the sea” by writing about various forms of transportation means such as wireless communications, the narrow-gauge train railway and the cross-sea bridge to show recognition and care for the local community. On the other hand, Japanese literati like Yasuki Inoguchi and Kubo Tokuji, with their rich literature and history education, viewed Bachimen as a “battlefield for reminiscing about the past”and expressed their deep thoughts about the rich history of the area. Based on a selection of about 50 poems related to Bachimen and the historical background of the poet’s creation, this paper explores the writings of common and distinct images of Bachimen in the poems of Taiwanese literati and Japanese literati as well as the reasons for such differences.
