Since the collapse of the authoritarian regime in Indonesia in 1998, erotic female writings have become quite popular for a long while. Sastra wangi, or literally translated as fragrant literature that refers to the écriture féminine in post-Suharto era, has also attracted the attention of Australian scholars. Female writers with different religions and backgrounds, through erotic narratives in their works, have challenged the authoritarian discourses of Suharto, and sought secular interventions in their religious doctrines. The confrontation triggers conflict and reconciliation, and further enables the secularization of Indonesia religious society. It has to be pointed out that sexual representations with boldness and explicitness in their works should be viewed as a violet coat covering women's writings, and therefore the so-called sastra wangi must be reconsidered. It should be firstly assessed from three perspectives: historical narratives, ethnic harmony and female liberation.
