Art education for social justice is an art pedagogy that emphasizes the use of artistic works to promote a better world by addressing societal issues such as inequality and injustice. Art education for social justice calls for inclusion and socially engaged learning where participants reflect upon the existing social conditions regarding access to power and equity. Driven by the spirit mentioned above, this article thus explores an art lesson on social justice conducted at a university in the southwestern United States. A piece of artwork titled Unraveling and Unraveled by artist Sonya Clark proved successful in inspiring college students to be more aware of social oppression through class discussions, art production, and art sharing. This study analyzed the participants’ written reflection notes on the process of this artistic project and the art products they have created. Their oral and written statements shed light on the potentialities of art education for social justice, especially regarding oppression.
