Nadezhda Lukhmanova (1841-1907) – novelist, playwright, publicist, lecturer. At the age of 62, she took part in the Russian-Japanese war as a nurse and war correspondent. The writer not only witnessed the events of the war, but also visited Japan, wanting to discover the origins of Japanese patriotism and understand the mentality of the nation. Lukhmanova's articles are respectful and thoughtful, which is in stark contrast to the openly offensive propaganda of the Russo-Japanese war period. The writer impressed the selfless love of the Japanese for the motherland, especially noticeable against the background of the frankly depressive moods prevailing in the Russian army. The writer wondered: is it possible to cultivate patriotic feelings in soldiers without resorting to jingoistic tricks?
