英文摘要

Obesity is a global health challenge, and earlier detection of patients with morbid obesity may improve adverse outcomes. In this observational study, 64 participants with morbid obesity (body mass index ≥ 35 kg/m2) and 128 age- and sex-matched controls were selected from 2,050 hospital staff. A significantly higher body mass index, body weight, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, triglyceride level, fasting plasma glucose level, self-reported average weekly working hours and a significantly shorter self-reported average sleep duration during weekdays were observed in the participants with morbid obesity (all p < 0.01). The subjective weekly working hours of these employees were significantly longer than their objective weekly working hours (p < 0.001) and the subjective weekly working hours of the healthy controls. Body mass index had a significant (p = 0.028) positive correlation with objective but not subjective weekly working hours in the group with morbid obesity. Seven of 19 women with morbid obesity had polycystic ovary syndrome. A definite difference in weight changes was observed between morbidly obese participants with and without motivation toward weight reduction (−9.2 ± 9.9 kg vs. 1.5 ± 8.0 kg). This is the first observational study that focused on hospital staff with morbid obesity. Our results provide evidence that personal volition affects body weight of morbidly obese employees, and a vicious cycle of morbid obesity should be taken seriously by the organization administrator.
