學術界對傳道書的研究往往以「積極或消極」兩極化的提問,來爭論傳道者的享樂論。本文認為其中原因在於對書中hebel一詞的理解,所以建議以改變對hebel的解讀來再思這位哲人的享樂論。Hebel的基本含義是蒸氣,一種具有變化無常以及模糊不清兩個特性的物體。傳道者以hebel的兩個特性為修辭策略來闡述享樂的經歷,目的並非是要探討享樂究竟是否應對人生困難之積極或消極的方法,而是要指出享樂像其他日光之下的事物一樣無常與模糊,是一種穿插於各種變化及模糊現象中之必要經歷。
There is a tendency in Ecclesiastes scholarship to address Qoheleth's concept of pleasure in dichotomized terms, debating whether pleasure is an optimistic or pessimistic approach to life. This essay argues that the reason for the dichotomy lies in the interpretation of the term hebel in the book; therefore it proposes to rethink the sage's concept of pleasure by using a different understanding of hebel. The basic meaning of hebel is vapor, which is characterized by its fluctuating and ambiguous nature. By employing these two characteristics in his rhetoric strategy, Qoheleth's purpose of delineating his experience of pleasure is not so much about whether pleasure is an optimistic or pessimistic way of handling life challenges, but to point out that pleasure is as fluctuating and ambiguous as everything under the sun, a kind of necessary experience interspersed with other fluctuating and ambiguous phenomena.
