This article explores the importance of “persons” in Catherine Mowry LaCugna's trinitarian theology. LaCugna believes that the personhood of the trinitarian God is directly grounded in God's relationships with others, and that the doctrine of the trinity is ultimately a practical, even personal, doctrine for Christian life. LaCugna insists on a relational trinity as, in her words: “Even though God dwells in light inaccessible, Christ is the visible icon of the invisible God, making tangible within human history and within human personality the ineffable mystery of God.” LaCugna stresses that it is not only a theological principle, but is reflected in a true Christian life to bring God's praise to the outward world (oikonomia) as it spreads it from within (theologia). LaCugna's trinity makes soteriology decisive for any theology of God and does not banish the trinity of persons to a mere intra-divine sphere unrelated to the personhood of the creature to put persons in relationship, that is, communion. She defines and proposes that the person of God is not self-contained, egotistical or self-absorbed, but includes an “ecstatic” outreaching desire for union with all creatures. Communion in the divine life is God's communing with us in Christ and as Spirit. Communion for her more fully reflects a living, practical doctrine of trinity. LaCugna's concludes: “Theology is inseparable from soteriology, and vice versa.” However, because LaCugna's trinity overemphasizes the oikonomia and cannot always be distinguished from history, it leads to the weakened importance of theologia and consequentially causes an imbalance in traditional trinitarianism. This article will re-consider LaCugna's trinitarian thinking in search of a solution that requires a more wide-ranging and constructive theological review further reflecting on God's inner substance. Nonetheless, her extraordinary contributions on the person in communion truly carries practical implications for Christian life and also revitalizes contemporary trinitarian theology.
