本文旨在探討日治時期嘉義中學校與嘉義高等女學校校歌、校徽的符號意象及其教育意涵之分析。本研究採用文本分析法,針對日治時期兩所中學的卒業記念寫真帖(畢業紀念冊)中校歌、校徽的文本進行符號意象的分析與探討。歸納研究有兩個結論:一、日治時期的嘉義中學校與嘉義高等女學校校歌歌詞中的符號意象,大致上分有六類:(一)學校地理位置的景觀;(二)在地物產名勝或歷史環境;(三)臺灣或嘉義意象之符號;(四)對師生或學校的期許、勉勵與認同;(五)時代精神與任務;(六)描繪日本與臺灣相對位置。而嘉義中學校校歌的符號意象除了教育信念的傳遞外,尚有軍國主義下的意識形態與愛國思想的傳遞;嘉義高等女學校校歌的符號意象除了教育出柔美與純真的女學生外,同樣也著重愛國意識的養成與天皇子民的忠誠灌輸。二、在日治時期的嘉義中學校與嘉義高等女學校的校徽符號意象上,兩校校徽各有其要傳達的教育理念與校訓準則,倘屏除軍國主義的意識形態,從兩校校徽「所指」的符號表徵,其背後更隱藏著鞭策與激勵之意。

英文摘要

The purpose of this study is to make comparison of symbolic images of the schools' songs and badges between Chiayi Middle School (is referred as CMS in the following) and Chiayi Girls' High School (is referred as CGHS in the following) during the Japanese colonial period. This study adopts the textual analysis, and the authors further investigate and make comparison between the two schools' song and badges from their yearbooks, especially made during the Japanese colonial period. After Inductive Method, there are two discoveries. Firstly, the schools' songs are being classified with six symbolic meanings among CMS and CGHS during Japanese colonial period. They are: 1) the overall landscape and geographical location of the school; 2) the popular souvenirs and scenery of the school or historical background; 3) the political symbol images of “Taiwan”or “Chiayi;” 4) the inspirations and expectations to the teachers, students and school; 5) the spirit and mission of the era; 6) the cartographic map of comparative location between Japan and Taiwan. Moreover, investigation shows that the school song of CMS not only expresses its educational ideal, but also transmits the ideology of Militarism and Patriotism. The purpose of the school song of CGHS is to form the ideal school girls which are gentle and innocent females during that time. Both school songs implant students their Patriotism and stay loyal to the Emperor of Japan. Secondly, from the school badges, both CMS and CGHS deliver their educational ideals and expectations of students. Aside from the ideology of Patriotism, the two schools' school badges further signify their hidden symbolic images of spur and encouragement to the students.
