Purpose: This study investigated the influence of a health education intervention on the preoperative state anxiety of outpatient surgery patients, while also seeking to confirm the factors influencing their preoperative state anxiety.

Methods: The subjects consisted of patients who received local anesthesia for outpatient surgery. There were total 193 patients participated, including 110 in the experimental group and 83 in the control group. The patients in the control group received the regular health education guidance provided by the hospital, while the patients in the experimental group watched a "surgery- period health education film". Results: After the intervention consisting of watching the surgery- period health education film, the mean anxiety score of the experimental group dropped from 40.3 ± 8.8 to 38.2 ±9.1. Meanwhile, female gender, pain tolerance, trait anxiety, surgical experience, and the company of friends and family were found to be the main predictors of preoperative anxiety.

Conclusions: The surgery-period health education film provides surgery-related information that effectively reduces patients’ preoperative state anxiety, while knowing the predictors of preoperative state anxiety could assist clinical nursing staff in identifying how patients’ anxiety can be addressed.
