Fumigants have long been important chemicals for grain preservation. With the discovery that methyl bromide depletes the ozone layer in the atmosphere, phosphine has become a popular fumigant due to its ease of diffusion, high effectiveness against major pest species, relatively low cost, and regulatory acceptance of residues. This paper, starting from occupational cases, reviews recent phosphine poisoning incidents, revealing the associated hazards and toxic mechanisms.
