英文摘要

As the gospel spreads across national, geographical, and sociocultural boundaries, believers in Jesus spread the Good News among their community members and beyond. Recent mission strategies often point to the importance of evangelism carried out by “same-culture” and “near-culture” Christian workers, as compared to the older paradigm of “far-culture” missionaries from a distant land being the primary bearer of the Good News. While the significance of “same-culture” and “near-culture” workers is unquestionable, one wonders if, as commonly understood, these workers are always at an advantage over “far-culture” workers in evangelism, and if there is anything left for the “far-culture” worker to do, other than serve in administrative, technical, or teaching support. Sensing a gap in serious missiological consideration of this theme, we offer in this paper reflections on the concept of same-, near-, and far-culture workers as messengers of Jesus. We will consider whether an unbalanced emphasis on “same-culture” and “near-culture” workers in global missionary strategy may contribute to creating barriers among God’s people, potentially undermining the message of reconciliation in Christ. We will draw on biblical, missiological, and anthropological resources along with lived experiences of select workers in each of the three categories. We desire this proposed paper to be sound in its biblical and academic reflection while relevant and helpful for those directly engaged in mission strategy and leadership.
