Three trials were conducted to investigate the effect of total mixed ration (TMR) used Napier grass as forage source, on the growth performance, digestive tract and feather trait in white Roman geese. In trial 1, two hundred and sixteen of days old goslings were divided into four treatments. Four treatments included: (1) goslings fed concentrate diet as control; (2) goslings fed TMR containing barley hull; (3) goslings fed TMR containing Napier grass; (4) goslings fed TMR containing Napier grass from 0 to 8 weeks of age and fed concentrate diet from 9 to 13 weeks of age. In trial 2, one hundred and sixty-eight of 14-day-old goslings were divided into four treatments. Four treatments included: (1) goslings fed concentrate diet as control; (2) goslings fed TMR containing 20% Napier grass; (3) goslings fed TMR containing 40% Napier grass; (4) goslings fed TMR containing 50% Napier grass. In trial 3, one hundred and forty-four of 6 weeks of age goslings were divided into four treatments again. Four treatments included: (1) goslings fed concentrate diet as control; (2) goslings fed TMR containing Napier grass 33.3%; (3) goslings fed TMR containing Napier grass 40%; (4) goslings fed TMR containing Napier grass 50%. There were three replicates for each treatment of three trials. Goslings fed isocaloric, isonitrogenous diets. Feed and water were supplied ad libitum. The results indicated that goslings fed TMR containing Napier grass level over 50% had lower feed intake and body weight gain than those fed control diet. However, the feed conversion ratio was improved and the development of digestive tracts was more fast. No cannibalism phenomenon was found in goslings received Barley hull and TMR containing Napier grass but there was a serious peck feather phenomenon in goslings received the control diet. Based on the above, when fresh Napier grass level for 50% of the TMR, although it will reduce the feed intake and early body weight gain of goslings, they still have a better feed conversion ratio and promote the early digestive tract development of geese. In addition, suppling Napier grass will also improve the feather pecking phenomenon because of insufficient crude fiber content in diet for goslings.
