This study aimed to investigate the effects of supplementation of potassium chloride in drinking water and bathing in water on the changes of plasma electrolytes and body temperatures of white-feathered Tsaiya ducks under exposure to sunlight during the hot season. In Experiment 1, the white Tsaiya ducks were allotted into two groups; the control and test group, each with 10 ducks. In the test group, two days prior to D1, drinking water supplemented with 1% KCl was provided to the ducks. Ducks in the two groups were exposed to the sun for 0 and 2 hours and subjected to body temperature check by infrared temperature thermal imaging camera. Blood samples collected from the wing veins were examined for the serum sodium, potassium and chloride ion concentrations. In Experiment 2, 12 white-feathered Tsaiya ducks were given water baths after outdoor exposure on cloudy and sunny days, and their facial and rectal temperatures were measured before and after the water baths. The experiments were conducted for 5 and 6 hours respectively. Our results showed that in Exp. 1 supplementation of KCl in drinking water had effects to some extent on serum sodium and chloride ion concentrations in white-feathered Tsaiya ducks exposed to the sun, yet showed no effects on body temperature changes and serum potassium as compared to the control group. In Exp. 2, taking a pond bath after sun exposure could significantly lower the facial temperature as well as rectal temperature (P<0.05). Taken together, the heat stress during hot seasons experienced by the white-feathered Tsaiya ducks after sun exposure could be better alleviated from the pond bathing than from the supplementation of KCl in drinking water, also a practical outcome for animal welfare.
