本文透過《史記》、《漢書》、《後漢書》等正史對瘟疫的考察，發現網路流傳「瘟疫，…長於大寒、盛於立春」之訊息，應屬謠言無疑。此外透過天花、黑死病與西班牙流感等瘟疫之考察，顯示這三種瘟疫在西方造成超過2億人死亡，是兩次世界大戰死亡總和的5倍，可見「瘟疫之害猶過於戰爭」，對國家、社會乃至世界必然造成重大的影響，舉其要者包括：一、促進中醫理論與實踐的發展。二、社會秩序陷入動盪與混亂。三、宗教信仰勢力範圍產生改變。四、影響天下大勢乃至世界版圖。五、羅馬天主教會威信日降。六、佃農制度崩潰財富重新分配。七、「文明病媒庫」與文明的擴張及滅亡。八、催化芳香化學與香氛產業的發展。九、催生現代公衛防疫體系。十、開啟全球合作防疫。
