The diabetic self-management tools for patients with visual impairment are still inadequate. This article described the nursing experience of caring a family with a couple having visual impairment and diabetes. During home visits, observation, interview, and family health assessment skill were used to identify the existing family health problems. We focused on the family health problem of diabetic diet self-management and discussed with the couple about the appropriate ways of providing diabetic diet guidance and information. After discussion, the family elected the modern communication software “LINE” as their preferred learning aid, because the “LINE” was their common daily communication tool. The smart phone for the visual impaired has a function that can convert the text file in “LINE” into voice output. In addition, it is portable, storable, and repeatable. Therefore, in addition to face to face discussion and health education, the reorganized text files of diabetes care as well as the principle of diabetic diet and food exchange were also transmitted to the family by “LINE”. This channel provides a convenient and repeatable learning opportunity to persons with visual impairment. The use of communication application is novel way of applying "listening" to compensate the limitations of visual impairment and then rectify patients’ misunderstanding about diabetic diet and improved their diet self-management behaviors.
