英文摘要

Objectives: A systematic review of genital herpes was conducted using many medical resources in order to introduce new concepts on this topic for urological practice. Genital herpes is one of the emerging sexually transmitted diseases in Taiwan in the past decade. Materials and Methods: Medical resource on the Internet, including MedPub, Google search, the International Herpes Management Forum (IFMF), World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control (CDC) of the US, standard textbooks of microbiology and sexually transmitted diseases, and other regular publications were utilized. Results: The 1960's medical concept that herpesvirus HSV-1 is confined to the orolabial region and HSV-2 causes genital ulcers has changed in the past few decades. In addition to the increasing seroprevalence of HSV-2 genital herpes, the rapid emergence of HSV-1 genital herpes as a consequence of the popularity of oral sex is one of the new public health burdens in this era. In addition, underdiagnosis, undertreatment, and asymptomatic viral shedding remain public health problems. A type-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for an HSV antibody, immunoglobulin G (IgG), is recommended for clinical practice. Acyclovir, Valciclovir, and Famvir are effective antiviral drugs available in Taiwan. Conclusions: Greater efforts in public health education, updating medical counseling quality, and more-aggressive steps in antiviral therapy will help control the spread of genital herpes.
