This article is to trace the history of the exegetical and theological meaning of theletter/Spirit contrast in 2 Corinthian 3: 6, from the early Church Fathers to Scott J.Hafemann, currently New Testament Professor at Wheaton College, and also offer anargument against the New Perspectives. The letter/Spirit contrast provides a keyplank in attempt to understand Paul’s view of the Law. Though scholarship on Pauland the Law in the last two decades has witnessed a “paradigm shift”, the writerinsists that the Law/Gospel antithesis inherited form the Reformation is not out of dateand the core value of reformation theology has not yet been replaced.
