In Taiwan’s large-scale urban development, modernization equates to economic growth that is conducive to transforming what once was a traditional agricultural society into an industrial society. After the government had implemented the “Urban Improvement Plan”, modern establishments such as Western-style buildings, parks, museums, head-water points, department stores, etc., emerged in Taipei city. This novel landscape has captivated people’s attention and inspired many artists. Japanese tourists traditionally buy postcards with stamps at tourist attractions to commemorate their visit and send them back to their hometown to share their travel experiences with their families. The content of postcards and postmarks portrays urban development and modernization in Taiwan. Artists such as Ishikawa Kinichiro (1871-1945), Kobayashi Shousen (1877-1946), Yoshida Hatsusaburo (1884-1955), Shiotsuki Toho(1886-1954) and Koto Gohara (1887-1965) , etc, created art pictures with this form. They documented Taiwan by depicting Japan’s New Eight Views, modernization construction and new landscapes. My perspective of art history is to conduct a thorough examination of relevant images with postcards and postmarks. The purpose of this study is to analyze how artists drew new landscape formation in Taiwan city and related them to their works. Furthermore, I aim to use semiotics theory to illustrate the connection between modernized and civilized life in this research. The results seek to explain the images with modern elements and the development of the arts under Japanese colonial rule.
