Chinese Union Version (CUV) was regarded as the most popular Bble translation among Chinese Christians. Although many new Chinese Bible translations have appeared in the last few decades, CUV is still the translation that Chinese church used most. There are, however, so many progresses in our understanding of the Wrd of God since CUV first published in 1919, and this translation appeared to be obsolete in many places. The main purpose of this article is show some passages in 1 John which are inappropriate translated at CUV. Take 1 John 3:2 as example, CUV translated the third clause as : “but we know that if he is manifested , we shall be like him” (Cf. KJV, RSV, NIV, NASB).Such translation suggests that Christians are waiting for the appearance of Christ in the last day, and Christians shall be like Christ at that time. The translation of the third clause is related to the first and second clause (Belove, we are God’s children now; it does not yet manifest what we shall be ) , and the key to right understanding of this verse is decided by how we interpret the verb “manifest” which is used in both second and third clause. “Manifest” can be understood as masculine (He Manifest) or neutral (it appeared), depending how we comprehend the context. The latter seems to be more nature since the context suggests that the author is confirming that readers now are children of God, and this fact is not yet manifest. But if this fact (What we shall be as God’s children) is manifested in the future, then we shall like Him. The correct understanding of this verse in Chinese translation is only showed at the Scotus Bible which is published by Catholic.
