Background and purpose: The objective of this study was to describe the clinical presentation of mixed infections in the gastrointestinal tract of children. There are only a few reports discussing the characteristics of mixed infection with Salmonella enterocolitis and rotavirus gastroenteritis. Methods: The study population consisted of 391 children who were seen in the Pediatrics Department of Cathay General Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, for acute gastroenterocolitis. Fecal specimens were collected at admission, and a rotavirus antigen was detected at that time. Eight patients were found to have mixed infection with both Salmonella and a rotavirus. Results: Eight patients(6 boys and 2 girls), who were infected by both Salmonella and a rotavirus, were admitted during July and August 2006 and April, May, and September 2007. The hospital stay ranged 2~10 days. The admitted patients ranged in age from 6 months to 5 years, 3 months (mean, 2.8 years). The fever course ranged 2~7 days. The Salmonella species were as follows: Salmonella group B(n = 5), Salmonella group D (n = 2), and Salmonella group C2 (n = 1). Patients who had mixed infection with both Salmonella and a rotavirus had more vomiting and watery diarrhea as well as stools containing blood and mucus. In a comparison of the C-reactive protein value between the 3 groups, the value was highest in the pure Salmonella-infected group, and lowest in the pure rotavirus-infected group. Conclusions: In this study, symptoms of mixed infection were similar to those of Salmonella enterocolitis, and significantly differed from those of rotavirus gastroenteritis. The mixed infection produced the same symptoms as that of Salmonella spp., except that the CRP level was relatively lower.
