The main purpose of this study was to examine the relative influences of family support and peer support on Taiwanese adolescents' ability to cope with the stressors from school, parents, peers, self, and the opposite sex.

Three hundred and foty-seven 7th graders from junior high schools in YungLing were randomly selected to participate in this study. Subjects were asked to complete the scales of perceived social support from family and peers (PSS-Fa and PSS-Fr) (Procidano and Heller, _1983), a scale including five potential stressful situations that may have been experienced by adolescents most often in the past two months, a question regarding the degree of perceived stressfulness of the stressors, and a coping scale corresponding to each stressor (Kuan, 1993).

The results indicated that adolescents from Yung-Ling tended to use more instrumental coping and less avoidance/emotional coping in dealing with the stressors from school, parents, peers, self, and the opposite sex. Moreover, contradictory to the proposed hypotheses that family support and peer support may have either a compensatory or a complementary effect on instrumental coping, the study found an additive effect. Finally, only family support was found to be important in predicting the use of avoidance/emotional coping, which is consistent with previous studies in that family support occupies the central place in adolescents' general well-being.
