由於科技進步，使得GPS的相關軟硬體改良許多，進而開拓GPS的應用領域。地圖製作過程需要相當數量的地面控制點，以便建立地圖坐標與地面坐標之關係。目前，GPS已成為地面控制點測量的主要方法之一。由於e世代的來臨，網際網路的普及，因而促成GPS測量方法的改進，如網基GPS資料處理等方法的誕生。此外，由於GPS的輔助，使得一種不需要地面控制點的製圖系統一DORIS系統成為可能。同時，一項結合GPS、數位地圖、網際網路、無線電等高科技的產物一數位天使，已逐漸和人們的日常生活結合在一起。值此知識經濟時代，除了應瞭解GPS的發展現況，更應明白GPS的未來發展方向，以充分利用GPS相關技術於地圖製作，並開發新産品。因此，本文將就GPS應用在地圖製作有關技術的發展趨勢加以探討：如GPS與其它衛星定位系統的現代化、網基GPS資料處理、DORIS系統、數位天使等。

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation and positioning system developed and maintained by Department of Defense, U.S.A. There are a lot of trends in GPS positioning techniques at the beginning of 21 century, such as the 'modernization' of the GPS, the GALILEO proposal, etc. In addition to improving GPS positioning accuracy and quality, those mega-trends will affect the map producing community. Besides, confluence of mobile communications, computing, positioning and Internet will fuel new mass markets in location-based services. Hence, issues such as GPS .modernization, GLONASS, GALILEO, Digital Angel, Web-Based GPS Processing, Differential Ortho-Rectification Imaging System (DORIS) etc., will be addressed in this paper.
