十六世季宗教改革，帶來的是教會的復興或是恩分裂?是建造或是拆毀?是現代的肇端或只是中世紀的尾聲?其性質純粹是宗教、神學的，或必須從社會、政治、經濟的角度著眼?是五百年前發生在歐洲的歷史事件或依舊提供普世教會及人類文明進展的動力?以上各項不一定是單選題，我們把看似對立的詞句並列，只是要凸顯宗教改革的多面向特性.學者們普遍同意，宗教改革不是單一事件，它的複雜度與深遠影響，在歷史洪流中享有獨特地位.綜覽並分析近五個世紀宗教改革史學研究之後，狄更斯與湯金下了一個結論:「不論從哪一個角度來看，宗教改革已經被證實，是近代各樣偉大國際運動中的巨人.」其多樣與深邃的理念，表明它非因一人而起，對教會及文化的發展也沒有因時空轉移而消逝.事實上，站在這個巨人的肩頭上，可使我們更清楚眺望前後：回首可評估中世紀，前瞻則可端詳現今的世代.一般而言，更正教界對於「宗教改革」時期的歷史似乎是情又獨鍾.因為在許多人眼中，它是一場轟轟烈烈的革命，是與弊端叢生之「異端」教會(天主教)分道揚鑣的更新運動，並開創了基督教會的新局面.然而，若要進一步詢問何謂「宗教改革」?在界定上需要考慮那些因素?它為什麼重要?它如何在多方面影響了現階段教會與人類歷史的發展?宗教改革的史學研究，在過去五百年歷經了哪些變化?現階段該領域學術研究的趨勢如何?少有人提供實質、有意義的答案.本文期待對以上所提的相關議題，做出初步的討論與介紹.論述過程中，將偏重以路德及德國的宗教改革作為例子加以說明.

The Protestant Reformation has been acclaimed by many scholars as “a giant among the great international movements of modern times.” Among distinct churches and academic circles, however, the interpretation about this multifaceted theological and ecclesial movement has appeared to be complicated and even contradictory. This article seeks to trace the historical definition of the term “Reformation” as well as to delineate its historiography in the past five centuries, highlighting some of the critical contributions and challenges. For over four decades, for instance, research from the perspective of the social-history school has not only greatly challenged the traditional viewpoint of ecclesiastical and doctrinal history, but also contributed significantly to the Reformation scholarship.
