The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in learning effects between using penholder grip and using shakehand grip in making a fore-hand, a backhand, a double cut, a short, or a push when playing table tennis. 47 subjects were drawn from male juniors and seniors enrolled in the two-year program at the National Taiwan Institute of Technology. These subjects were beginners who selected table tennis as their area of special interest in their P.E. class. The age of the subjects ranged from 20 to 26 with an average height of 171 cm and an average weight of 64 kg. Subjects were randomly assigned to either the group first practicing with penholder grip then with shakehand grip or to the group first using shake hand grip then using penholder grip. An equivalent time-samples design was used in this study, and the data were analyzed by using one-way ANDV A.The results are listed as follows:
1.A significant difference was found between pre-and posttest scores at p < 0.01 in using both penholder and shakehand grips, indicating that subjects made good progress in playing table tennis. 2. No significant difference (F = 2.33) was found in the two posttest scores, the one with subjects using penholder grip and the one with subjects using shakehand gnp. 3. When making back-hand strokes, a significant differencewas found between the two posttest scores at p < 0.01. The subjects, when using shakehand grip, got a mean score of 4.38; when using penholder grip, the subjects received a mean score of 4.82. 4. When making fore-hand strokes, no significant difference was found between the subjects using either the penholder grip (mean score 4.52) or the shakehand grip (mean score 4.38). 5. When making short or push strokes, the subjects using shakehand grip (mean scoring 6.16) were better than the subjects using penholder grip (mean scoring 5.77). A significant difference was detected at p6. When making double cuts, no difference was found at p < 0.01 between the subjects using either the penholder grip (mean score 6.42) 0r the shakehan grip (mean score 6.31).
