Method: Previous studies showed that optimism was associated with decreasing levels of self-esteem and well-being (Robin & Beer, 2001; Conversano et al., 2010). However, the underlying processes of the association between optimism and better selfesteem are yet clarified (Scheier and Carver, 1992; Carver, 2010). Optimism has been found to relate to better psychological well-being through employment of specific coping strategies (Carver, 2010) and the aim of the present work is to investigate the coping processes that accounts for the relationship between optimism and self-esteem. According to the definition of optimism proposed by Scheier and Carver (1985), optimism was described as the stable tendency to believe that good rather than bad things will happen. We therefore hypothesized that optimistic people are more likely to use proactive coping, which may hence influence self-esteem. In short, the present study examined whether subjects' proactive coping mediate the link between optimism and self-esteem. One hundred and seventy one undergraduate students from Fu Jen University (72men, 99 women;19-38 years of age) completed measures of optimism (Life Orientation Test-Revised, LOT-R), self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale), and proactive coping subscale (The Proactive Coping Inventory).
Results: Results of mediation tests showed that proactive coping mediated the relationship between optimism and self-esteem.
Conclusion: The findings showed that proactive coping results from optimism could accounts for the beneficial effect of optimism on selfesteem.
