英文摘要

Objective: Prior research indicates that the employees in the semi-conduction industry suffer from much work stress. There are many research efforts made to understand the types of stressors these individuals experience, but there are not enough investigations illustrating the effects of stress coping strategies and professional efficacy on work stress and work stress outcomes. This study aims to examine the effects of coping strategies and professional efficacy on work stress and stress outcomes including physical health, emotional burnout, and cynicism.
Method: In this study, stress coping strategies are categorized into two types: the active pro-social coping and the passive anti-social coping. Professional efficacy is conceptualized as a sense of achievement or positive expectation of one's job performance. Work stress outcomes include physical health, emotional burnout, and cynicism. A sample of 550 employees at a semiconduction company in Hsin Chu participated in this study and filled out questionnaires of work stress, coping strategies being used, professional efficacy, and work stress outcomes.
Results: (1) When work stress is greater, there are more physical health problems, emotional burnout, and cynicism. (2) Although the use of active pro-social coping strategies has no moderating effects on work stress outcomes, it improves an individual's cynicism directly. (3) The use of passive anti-social coping strategies shows moderating effects on emotional burnout derived from high work stress. That is, the more passive anti-social coping strategies are used under high levels of work stress, the more serious emotional burnout is found. (4) Professional efficacy does not have any mediating effect on work stress or work stress outcomes.
Conclusion: As compared with professional efficacy, specific types of coping strategies show more effects on work stress outcomes. It should be noted that the more passive anti-social coping is used, the more emotional burnout is generated under high levels of work stress. The implications of these findings are discussed. Suggestions for future studies including raising more specific research questions, as well as improving the design of the study and the data collection methods, are also presented.
